HEALTH BENEFITS OF A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

By Chris Chenoweth

The people who live in countries that border the Mediterranean Sea have a significantly decreased incidence of heart disease, chronic diseases, and cancer, and the highest adult life-expectancy rate. All of these health benefits even though the traditional Mediterranean diet contains 40% of total daily calories from fat. How is this possible?

Olive oil, a staple of a Mediterranean diet, is a monosaturated fatty acid and counteracts animal fats. This type of fat does not raise blood cholesterol levels and is an excellent source of antioxidants. Monounsaturated fats are, in fact, required for the body in order to function effectively.

Another staple of their diet, fish, is high in omega-3 fatty acids, something that most people do not get enough of. Because fish is such an important part of their diet, red meat is eaten very sparingly. This increases good health as omega-3 fats are considered to be essential to human nutrition.

It is also thought that a Mediterranean diet is healthier than the North European and American diet because, in addition to olive oil, more grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts are consumed. There is also much less processed food that is eaten, a large contributor to the poor eating habits of Americans.

The diet itself, instead of counting calories, focuses on a different approach to dieting. It is not concerned primarily with which foods are the best to eat, but how to eat them. Mediterranean style means eating food slowly and savoring the taste of the food.

FEATURES OF A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Diets can vary between the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. However, there are some common denominators within all of these diets:

*High consumption of olive oil.

*High consumption of fruit, legumes, and vegetables.

*High consumption of grains, pasta, rice, bulgar, couscous, beans, nuts and seeds.

*High consumption of garlic. Garlic lowers your cholesterol level and protects you against cancer.

*Moderate consumption of grilled and steamed fish.

*Low consumption of lean red meat and lean pork.

*Low consumption of eggs and dairy products.

*Low consumption of red wine.

*Regular exercise is an important part of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Food that is eaten in the Mediterranean area has many health benefits. It has high quantities of:

*MONOUNSATURATED FATS – lowers cholesterol, reduces heart disease, protects against breast and colon cancer. It provides essential fatty acids for healthy skin and the development of body cells.

*ANTIOXIDANTS – act as scavengers, helping to prevent cellular and tissue damage that results in many chronic diseases and cancer.

*CAROTENOIDS – naturally occurring compounds that produce the red, yellow, and orange colors found in many fruits and vegetables and prevent a wide range of diseases.

*PHYTOCHEMICALS - plant chemicals that have disease preventive properties, protect our cells and reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer.

GUIDELINES FOR EATING THE MEDITERRANEAN WAY

Plan your meals a week ahead. Try to include a wide variety of foods in your menu plan.

*Replace butter and other fat with extra virgin olive oil in cooking and baking. Season your olive oil with garlic and/or herbs and spices.

*Instead of dessert, eat a plateful of fresh fruit.

*Eat lots of whole grains and beans.

*Replace white potatoes with sweet potatoes.

*Eat meals full of color! Add a variety of vegetables by eating salads and soups.

*Limit processed foods.

*Add fish to your diet twice a week and cut down on red meat.

*Drink lots of water, never sugar-sweetened sodas.

What are the benefits of a Mediterranean diet? The health benefits include reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, and stroke and an increase in life expectancy. Do your own research to see if the Mediterranean diet will work for you.

NASA scientists conceded on Tuesday that the 10-year-old Mars Global Surveyor is probably lost in space after the U.S. agency tried unsuccessfully for

Mars probe feared lost in space

The spacecraft, the oldest of five NASA robotic explorers studying Mars, was circling the planet snapping high-resolution images and studying the climate in a mission that led to the first evidence that water once flowed on the planet's surface.

The Global Surveyor went silent after reporting problems with a sticky solar panel, and scans of the skies have produced no sign of it.

"MGS was a fantastic mission. It has really revolutionized how we look at Mars," Fuk Li, Mars Exploration Program manager told reporters. "We haven't given up hope, but we are all ready to celebrate a long life and a job well done."

One chance remained on Tuesday to recover the probe, which has been programmed to transmit a signal to NASA's robotic geology station, Opportunity, located near Mars' equator.

Opportunity will relay any signal from the orbiter to Earth during passes on Tuesday and Wednesday via the Mars Odyssey.

"If MGS is in the sky and its (transmitter) is on, then Opportunity should receive it," John Callas, project manager for the Mars Exploration Rover mission, said.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., lost contact with the spacecraft on November 2 after it signaled it was having trouble moving one of its solar panels to track the sun as it emerged from behind Mars.

8 Resources to Help you Find a Good Attorney

It may seem ridiculous but according to those in the know often finding an attorney is harder than finding a husband or wife. An attorney is the one who will ensure that your business stays on the right side of the law, and draft all agreements and contracts so that your interests are protected at all times. If the attorney is to represent you in court you need to have a special relationship with him or her so that they understand you in totality and give you the best representation possible. Remember an attorney is not to be contacted when in trouble but much before he can keep you out of trouble by looking after legal aspects of your work and personal affairs.

So, you must choose an attorney with great care. Ways to locate attorneys are:

  1. One way of ensuring you get an attorney of standing is to seek referrals from friends, family members and others in your business. Weigh recommendations carefully because some people may have vested interests. Be sharp.

  2. Use a lawyer referral service. The state or bar association will be able to recommend a lawyer referral service to you. Or you could find one from the World Wide Web there are lawyer directories like http://aol.lawyers.com/ .

  3. By searching through a public directory like the Martindale Hubbell Law Directory. This directory lists lawyers that practice in the and 159 other countries. See: http://www.martindale.com/ .

  4. You could visit courts in sessions and watch lawyers in action and decide you like x or y and then find out all you can about them.

  5. Read about prominent cases in newspapers and magazines to locate a suitable lawyer.

  6. Check out local Bar Associations and look through their membership rosters. The American Bar Association has a website with in depth information on law and attorneys.

  7. Surf through websites that have information on law as well as lawyers for the state you live in and choose an attorney who has expertise in your area of work.

  8. Through advertisements placed by law firms or individual attorneys.

You must be practical and sensible when you need to choose an attorney to handle your affairs. According to experts avoid selecting an attorney from advertisements and self promotional articles in magazines. Attorneys must be chosen from reliable recommendations.

Be sure to check the attorney’s credentials, qualifications, and whether or not he has the membership to the right law associations. Find out his rate, successes, failures, dependability, and whether he handles the cases himself or has a battery of assistants who do his work.

Avoid smooth talkers, those who will not meet your eye while speaking to you, those that dismiss you with a handshake, cup of coffee and a smile. A true attorney is one who will take time to discuss your needs in detail, go over the pros and cons of your case, and give you a clear idea of whether or not you have a chance to win your case.

An attorney will be a partner in your life in many ways. So select with care.

Names And eMail Addresses-Newbies - Go After Them Now

Names and email addresses are the gold dust of the internet. Newbies, you must go after them now. This is your bread and butter. It’s also called your optin list. Call it what you like, you must get your own list.

Do not procrastinate on this one. Immediate action is required. Focus your early efforts on acquiring your very own optin list. You’ll be well on your way to surviving on the internet if you do the following:

Provide Something Free And Of Perceived Value

Information products are the easiest and least expensive way for you to go. Isn’t information what the internet is all about? That settles it then. An Information product it will be.

It must be something of value. It could be a special report on fuzzy dice. An informative email course on the various moods of a dissatisfied wife, (maybe not that topic, but an email course nonetheless). Go ahead and write a few related articles. Use them to compile an ebook and give that away free. You see were I’m going with this don’t you?

A Free Swap

We’ve finally decided to write a special report on “How To Start A Home-Based Business.” It’s a great topic. Investigating it will help you as a newbie. Hold on now, the special report is free, yes.

But let’s not just give it away. Use it to get something, like names and email addresses? Glad you suggested that. We’ll dangle the special report like a carrot. If anyone wants it, they can have it free of charge. But they must give their name and email address for it.

Building The Most Important Ingredient-Trust

Make sure the special report is chuck full of helpful information. That’s vitally important. Your reputation depends on it. Consider this.

Someone gave you information that helped your family. Maybe it even saved you time and money. Then next week your inbox has another email from them. What? Are you going to delete the email? Of course not! It may contain more helpful information.

That’s trust-building. Let’s say you purchased a product from the internet. That product turned out to be fantastic for your family. It helped you automate the many chores of a busy household.

Remember now, you’re still a newbie at this. You don’t as yet own your own product, but you’re close. Here’s what you do. That fantastic product that helped your family so much, become an affiliate of that product.

Affiliate Programs

Its usually free to sign up as an affiliate. The program would give you an affiliate ID. They also give you tools like banners and text ads to help you drive traffic to sell their product.

You’re one up though. You’ve been doing your homework. You already have an optin list of your own. You can and probably should learn to use that stuff. It will give you another option for getting traffic. You shouldn’t put all your eggs into one basket.

All of the previous tips come down to this. That fantastic product that helped your family, remember it? You’re now an affiliate for it right? Yes…the one which gives you $25 every time you make a sale?

Tell your 350 names and addresses you have captured with the special report about this great product. Let them know how this awesome product helped your family. Make suggestions for them to purchase this great product.

They may live alone, fine. Suggest that they buy it for their next door neighbor or maybe for their grand children. You can do this. If 40 people on your list of 350 purchase the product, you have made a cool $1,000.

Understand now why it is crucial for you to get a list? What are you waiting for? Get cracking on your list. All the best.

The names and email addresses that you capture are priceless. But they are nothing without mutual trust and respect. Wycliffe Williams has worked hard on his list. Far and away, the best people who have helped him get his list can be found here: www.wyclefinnovations.com/wr

New Republic Suspends an Editor for Attacks on Blog

By MARIA ASPAN

A senior editor at The New Republic was suspended and his blog was shut down on Friday after revelations that he was involved in anonymously attacking readers who criticized his posts.

Lee Siegel, creator of the Lee Siegel on Culture blog for tnr.com, was suspended indefinitely from the magazine after a reader accused him of using a “sock puppet,” or Internet alias, to attack his critics in the comments section of his blog. An editor’s apology replaced the blog on the Web site, announcing that the blog would no longer be published and noting that The New Republic deeply regretted “misleading” its readers.

Franklin Foer, the New Republic’s editor, said in an interview that he first became aware of the accusations against Mr. Siegel on Thursday afternoon, after a colleague noticed a comment in the Talkback section of Mr. Siegel’s blog that accused him of using the alias “sprezzatura” to defend his articles and assail his critics.

That comment, posted by a reader named “jhschwartz” on Aug. 27, said that “sprezzatura appears only to weigh in on TNR forums to admonish and taunt posters who dislike Lee Siegel” before concluding, “I would say with 99% confidence that ‘sprezzatura’ is a Siegel alias.”

“We launched an investigation,” Mr. Foer said. He added that he was confident that sprezzatura’s posts were written with Mr. Siegel’s “full cooperation,” but declined to say whether the alias was used by Mr. Siegel himself because the affair was still under investigation. “As soon as the facts of the case became clear to me on Friday, we closed down the blog and made an announcement.” Mr. Foer said that while he liked to see blog posts before they were published, Mr. Siegel did not have an editor assigned to his blog entries.

Moving Dilemmas Consider Storage Facilities

Author: Paul Wilson

Over the years people unconsciously acquire things. The clutter or excessive furniture, object d’ art, or books only get noticed when it is time to move. Then you have to find an answer to the problem. Well you can take everything with you, or donate things to family, friends, or charity, or have a garage sale, or put things into storage.

The modern solution is to put things you don’t want to use but cannot part with into a state-of-art storage facility. Many storage units have things like climate control, pest control to prevent destruction of stored items, as well as round the clock security.

When locating a storage unit keep in mind issues like will you need to take things out of storage often? If yes then choose a facility located close to where you live. Compute how much space you will actually need. Experts recommend taking a smaller space and filling it floor to ceiling rather than paying for space that will never be used. There are options like mini storage for really small loads. Think about whether you are storing antiques or paintings if yes, then look climate controlled storage.

Standard sizes of units are: 5x10; 10x10; 10x20; and 10x30. Find out how many items each kind can store. For example a 10x20 can hold most things from a two bedroom house while a 5x10 will hold a couch, chair, chest of drawers, small boxes, bicycles, and motorcycles.

Make a list of possible units. Find out how long they have been in operation and whether they have a solid reputation. Read all the rules and regulations. Some storage units allow 24 hr access while others have timings. Consider protecting your goods with sufficient insurance coverage.

Pack all the items to be stored in weather resistant strong boxes with padding like bubble wrap if there are breakables. Make a key list what each box contains and decide a priority list where by what you are unlikely to use will be stored at the bottom or back of the facility and what you may need to retrieve will be stored in front such that it becomes easily accessible.

The rent to be paid will be calculated on the size of the unit, the number of units available of the size you need, the term of lease, as well as facilities offered. Even storage facilities offer discounts so do ask. Clever negotiation can save you money. Many facilities charge in addition to rent, set up or processing fees as well as late fees if the rent is not paid within the stipulated time. Read the agreement carefully and seek answers to questions regarding security, insurance, the presence of an on site manager, adequate lighting, and ownership of the facility. Ask for references and check them out.

Songs can be sold on the bands

MySpace to sell songs from indie bands

By Reuters

MySpace, the wildly popular online teen hangout, said on Friday it will make its first move into the digital music business by selling songs from nearly 3 million unsigned bands.

MySpace is the latest company to try to take on Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store, but unlike many other start-up rivals, it already boasts 106 million users, as well as the backing of parent company News Corp.

"The goal is to be one of the biggest digital music stores out there," MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe told Reuters. "Everyone we've spoken to definitely wants an alternative to iTunes and the iPod. MySpace could be that alternative."

In the past year, MySpace.com has become the single most visited Internet address among U.S. Web users, according to Hitwise, with mainly teenagers and young adults using the site to socialize, share music and photographs.

Before the end of 2006, De Wolfe said MySpace will offer independent bands that have not signed with a record label a chance to sell their music on the site. MySpace says it has nearly 3 million bands showcasing its music.

Songs can be sold on the bands' MySpace pages and on fan pages, in non-copyright-protected MP3 digital file format, which works on most digital players including Apple's market-dominating iPod.

The bands will decide how much to charge per song after including MySpace's distribution fee, said Rusty Rueff, the chief executive of Snocap, which will manage the e-commerce service. Snocap provides digital licensing and copyright management services and was started by Napster founder Shawn Fanning.

Rueff said the "small" distribution fee was not yet fixed.

DeWolfe said MySpace would be "enhancing and customizing" its online music store as the service evolves, aiming to eventually offer copyright-protected songs from major record companies.

"I don't think the record companies are going to be interested in distributing music without copy protection anytime soon," said David Card, analyst at Jupiter Research.
